Case in point: Possibly the fastest, most frantic day of fishing I’ve ever enjoyed occurred a few years back on the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, when buddy Jason Gogan and I caught over 250 striped bass in a few short hours.
You can never go wrong leading with your strength
Like most anglers, I love learning new tricks and techniques. At the same time, however, I’ve learned over the years that when the going gets tough, and you really don’t know where to begin, you can never go wrong leading with your strength.
I won’t bore you with the details because you can read about them HERE in the blog that I wrote at the time. The point I want to emphasize, however, is before that day, neither Jason nor I had ever caught a striped bass in salt water.
So how did we arrive so quickly at the best day of fishing either of us had ever experienced? Well, the truth of the matter is that I talked with several local striped bass anglers in the Cabela’s store in Moncton a few days prior, and everything I heard made the stripers sound like walleyes back home.
So, when Jason and I launched the boat in the morning and I rigged up our rods, I started fishing exactly the way I would have if I had been back home chasing walleyes. I spooled on my favourite gel-spun line, added a mono leader and then tied on my favourite walleye swimbait.
It is the subject of this week’s short Fish Talk With The Doc video that I recorded for Ang and Pete, and the Fish ‘N Canada television show. Just click on the link below and enjoy.
