Common mole rat (subfamily Spalacinae), one of eight species of burrowing rodents living in the Eastern Mediterranean and black sea regions.
Among the several rodents called “mole rats” (see Zokor), the common mole-rat is one of the most interesting in form, having a beveled, cylindrical body, short limbs and protruding cutting teeth. Feet and claws are surprisingly small for such a specialized body.
Description of the animal
Mole rats seem to be eyeless and blind as a mole as a functioning remnants of these parts of the body covered with fur and is therefore not visible. The full scientific name of the species: Spalax graecus Nehring, 1898. Other titles: mole Greek. One of the 5 modern species of the genus, one of the four species of the genus in the fauna of Ukraine (Topachevskii 1969).
Biological characterization. Typical biotopes – residual plots of virgin lands, pastures, hayfields, slopes of ravines and forest edges, and roadsides field roads, field-protective forest plantations, plots of land and fields with crops of cultivated plants. Mole is a highly specialized digger living in long (up to 200 m) branched burrows. The area of individual plots from 90 (young) to 250 m (Yangolenko 1961).
The nesting chamber primarily one lined with dry grasses; storage located at a depth of up to 1.5 m.
